One Size Fits All Pain Relief

A petition is now before the Food and Drug Administration that will re-label opioid analgesics (narcotic pain medications) to determine the amount of pain relief appropriate for you regardless of the disease from which you suffer.

The petition, submitted by Physicians for Responsible Opioid Prescribing (PROP), requests three specific changes to opioid analgesic labels:

1- That they no longer be prescribed for “moderate” noncancerous pain, but only for “severe” noncancerous pain

2- That the maximum allowable dosage per day be equivalent to 100 mg of morphine for noncancerous pain

3 – That this medication can only be used for a maximum duration of 90 DAYS.

What this petition appears to mandate is a “one size fits all” prescribing mentality, which DOES NOT benefit the chronic pain patients in general and CRPS patients, in particular. ~Jim Broatch, Executive Vice President and Director

The RSDSA (Reflex Sympathetic Dystrophy Syndrome Association) is asking that ANYONE who is worried by this possible outcome to send a letter immediately and contact all family and friends and ask them to do the same. YOUR health and ability to function with many diseases are at risk.

The sample letter below is provided by the RSDSA. Mr. Broatch said in a recent email, “For those of you who would like to send your own personal response regarding PROP to the FDA, we encourage you to stress the specific details that your medication enables you to do and that without it you would be unable to do.”

My name is  _______. As a person  who suffers with the chronic and  yet incurable pain of  CRPS,  I ask the FDA to deny the PROP petition. I use opioids as prescribed by my physician allowing me to function better and partake in life in ways I would be unable to do without this prescribed care.

To send your comments to the FDA click here. The category to use for your response is Individual Consumer.

Your immediate action to this issue will make a difference. To read the PROP petition, click here.
The RSDSA chose to oppose the PROP petition on behalf of our members. On Wednesday, October 10th, The RSDSA sent this opposition letter to the FDA. Click here to read the letter.

Hunger Nation

When you think of hunger and poverty, where does your mind immediately flash? Most charities, humanitarians and philanthropists focus on foreign nations where 925 million people were hungry and 14 billion people were living in extreme poverty in 2005. Thus, the ads you see highlight the problem in these areas.

While I acknowledge this is a staggering and terrible statistic, there were 46.2 million people – roughly 15 percent or 1 in 6 of all Americans – who went hungry due to ongoing poverty in 2011. Sadly, this included 16.1 million children.

However, the hunger and poverty problem in America is largely ignored, and it’s time to put a halt to that. Sir Thomas Browne said it best in 1642, “Charity begins at home.”

We. What a small but powerful word. …Let’s use that force to eradicate hunger from the wealthiest nation in the world.

Clearly tackling a problem this large is too much for one person regardless of his wealth or even an organization or the government. Working together we have the power to do it.

Take canned foods and other non-perishables to your regional food banks regularly. This will help those in need in your local community. Take extra clothes, especially coats and shoes, and blankets to homeless shelters or the Salvation Army.

If you’re concerned with your own community, do not make donations over the phone. Often, like in the case of the Salvation Army and the state patrol, the funds go to the state and are divided. Take donations directly to local offices.

Organizations need help year round not just at Christmas. Be charitable all year.

Resist making donations directly to homeless people. Sadly, there are some people who use this as a scam or for drugs and your money is not helping anyone. Instead encourage them to use available social services.

Child Eating Healthy

Organizations like Feeding America work with corporations and donors like you to provide meals nationally. The largest hunger-relief charity in the U.S., Give A Meal provides eight meals for just a dollar from each private donor. Visit Feeding America for more information.

We. What a small but powerful word. You, I, the next guy, and so forth working together as one to accomplish a single goal becomes a powerful force. Let’s use that force to eradicate hunger from the wealthiest nation in the world.

CRASH!

My external hard drive crashed! My dreams of returning the archive to this site are extremely ify now. Actually I lost a lot of much more material. There are a lot of informative articles lost on the drive so I’m sorry to see them go. I’ll be looking into backing up articles in multiple locations in the future (if I can afford them.) I do not have an income. I do this as I physically can because it’s my passion.

Say some prayers for data retrieval please. I really need some of the lost material.

Beating Hunger in the U.S.

Tags

The statistics are staggering: 13 percent of Americans live in poverty resulting in 16.7 million hungry children. That’s one in four U.S. children. Before the age of 65, 51.4 percent of all citizens will live in poverty.

National nutrition programs are in place in schools to provide children breakfast and lunch. The Food Stamp Program, the Special Supplemental Nutrition Program for Women, Infants and Children (WIC), and other nutritional program operated by the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) serve millions of U.S. residents daily.

Charity organizations such as churches and soup kitchens step in to aid the homeless.

However, the programs are short-term fixes for the larger problem. As the Chinese proverb says, “Give a man a fish and he can eat for a day. Teach a man to fish and he can eat for a lifetime.”

The root of poverty is the lack of jobs. This is a problem that began around 1820 in the U.S. and has only worsened with time. It’s unlikely to ever be fixed. We must feed our people now.

During World World II, ration stamps limited purchases of sugar, butter, meat and many other items. Women started “victory gardens” in their yards to grow vegetables for their families. This freed the farmers’ productions for the troops.

We need to alter city ordinances permit our citizens to once again plant “victory gardens” for their own use, especially in project housing. Some residences with confined spaces will need container gardens. People should not be jailed for growing food.

Offer low-cost seeds for those living below the poverty line.

Conduct classes to teach first time “farmers” how to germinate the seeds and when to transplant the seedlings to the ground or the containers.

Designate areas in every village, town and city for community gardens.

In high-rise buildings, you can use container garden on terraces. With permission and if the roof is strong enough, you can establish a community garden. Information is available on the Internet.

We stand to gain nutritious food for the poor, oxygen for the air and more greenery in the cities with a return to these “victory gardens.” Most importantly it provides a victory over hunger.

First Lady Michelle Obama has advocated small container gardens for kids on the Disney Channel for more than a year. She touts the nutritional value of the vegetables. This just expands her idea and feeds the poor.
